The team, including Envireau and the Borough Council, has conducted extensive work on two boreholes and replaced a pumping system in the Victorian well. Now tests have shown that the supply of spa water is back to its original quality and quantity.
The old supply was cut off in 2003 after it became contaminated with groundwater and reduced the mineral content so much that it no longer qualified as spa water.
Restoration work began in summer 2004 after local bathroom and shower manufacturer, Kohler Mira, stepped in to sponsor Cheltenham Borough Council’s project.
Roger Wilson, managing director for Kohler Mira, said: “The restoration of the spa water supply is fantastic news for the local community and the economy. The project has produced results faster than any of us hoped, and now we can look forward to the official re-launch of the spa in the coming months.”
Richard Simkin, manager of Pittville Pump Room for Cheltenham Borough Council said: “The findings of the initial tests were very encouraging and now they have been confirmed. Even though our restoration work is yet to be completed, we can safely say that Cheltenham’s supply of spa water has been secured for the future.”
Councillor Rowena Hay, Council Deputy for Health, Wellbeing and Economy said: “Restoring the spa water has been a priority for encouraging tourism in the area. It is thanks to the hard work of the team from Envireau, the Borough Council and the support of Kohler Mira that we have achieved this important goal so quickly.”
The restoration project will continue over the coming months and an official launch event is scheduled for the spring.
