Nick Beck arrived for his last day at the Kohler Mira factory on Cromwell Road, Cheltenham, exactly the same way he arrived for his first – in his 1940’s Austin Seven car (pictured).
Car enthusiast Mr Beck, 62, started as an apprentice at what was then the Walker Crosweller factory in 1962 aged 19, and he drove to work in the car his father purchased in 1947. Since then he has risen through the ranks to retire this week as Research Manager, even completing an engineering degree sponsored by the company.
Mr Beck’s last day was marked with a party, and his cheeky colleagues wrapped his treasured car in bubble wrap and attached balloons to it.
Nick commented “I have stayed at Kohler Mira for 43 years because people seem to get on well with each other here. It is rare for people to enjoy their jobs these days, but I have always considered this a really nice place to work. I would like to thank everyone at the company for the opportunities and kindness extended to me over the years.”
He was joined later on in the day by Caroline, his wife of 39 years standing, who brought in over a hundred pieces of homemade lemon drizzle cake to share with his colleagues.
Managing director of Kohler Mira Roger Wilson said “Congratulations to Nick on his well-earned retirement. His contribution to the company over the years has been considerable, and we wish him all the best for the future. Kohler Mira is a family company and we try to foster a similar approach to our employees – Nick joins a substantial list of Mira employees who have been recognised for long service to the company.”
In his retirement, Nick is looking forward to spending more time on his hobbies, which include vintage cars, old steam engines and restoring his Edwardian house.
Kohler Mira, in its various guises, has been based in Cheltenham since the 1930s, and through the years has employed over 35,000 local people – that is one in four residents of the town – including several generations of many families.
