Gloucestershire Could Save Over Six Million Litres Of Water A Day

April 2006

Following the introduction of a total ban on hosepipes by Britain’s biggest water company, figures show that people living in Gloucestershire could save an incredible 6,509,753 million litres of water each day, the equivalent of over 6 Olympic swimming pools - simply by taking a shower.

Water shortages, hosepipe bans and pending drought are not what you expect to hear on a wet day in April, yet the latest ban from Thames Water follows similar ones rolled out by South East Water, Southern Water, Mid Kent and Cholderton & District Water.

With the South East experiencing its driest period for more than 80 years* and water companies already feeling the pinch, it is likely others will soon follow suit.

Out of the 24 million homes in the UK, 75% have a shower and if everyone in the UK who owns a shower used it instead of bathing, they would save a whopping 693 million litres of water a day**.

Roger Crabb, water expert from Mira Showers, said: “These statistics are staggering. Water is one of our most precious commodities and the threat of shortages is a very serious concern. However it is never too late to think about ways you can save water and money on your household bills. We can all do our bit to help.”

Roger’s top tips on saving water:

  1. Have a shower instead of a bath. The average shower uses over 15 litres less than the average bath.
  2. Use a water saving method such as a ‘Hippo’ or ‘Save-a-flush’ to reduce the amount of water used when flushing the toilet.
  3. Keep drinking water in the fridge so you do not need to run the tap for cold water.
  4. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.
  5. Collect rainwater in a water butt in your garden for watering plants and lawns.

Roger continued: “We can all play our part in saving water and simple changes could potentially make a huge difference. Being aware of how we use water is the first step, such as noticing how long you spend in the shower. The Mira Magna shower for example, has a digital timer so you know exactly how long you are showering for.

“We can all help by monitoring how and when we use water and by promoting sensible usage habits for the whole household.”
