MIRA SHOWERS GOES GREEN AT WHADDON SITE

May 2007

Cheltenham based Kohler Mira Ltd is continually reassessing its green initiatives, building on its record of reducing overall factory waste by more than 37.5% in eight years.

Helping to encourage greener practices at work, Mira's Whaddon site in Cheltenham has already achieved reduced waste tonnage from 160 tonnes to under 100 tonnes per annum since the programme was first launched in 1999.

In 2006 Mira introduced a baler for cardboard, that cut waste disposal costs by over £6000. This proved so successful a smaller baler was introduced to handle cling film and pallet wrap.

Roger Crabb, marketing manager for Kohler Mira, said: “We all need to take a responsible attitude towards protecting the environment. Mira is continually evaluating how best to limit waste and create an environmentally sound place to work and live.“

In addition, Mira has increased paper recycling throughout the company. It is recycling stamps on behalf of Guide Dogs for the Blind, as well as, recycling printer cartidges, aluminium cans, plastics cups, wood pallets, bubble wrap bags, glass jars and waste ceramics.

Community interaction is very much at the heart of the Whaddon site and one of the other ways in which Mira is able to share the recycling message is through its involvement with schools and locally based groups in the town.

For example, the recycling of ‘off cuts' of shower hoses are sent to a resource centre for use by schools, playgroups and church groups in the town.

As well as local businesses, homeowners are also taking recycling seriously. Research shows that homeowners in England are gradually switching to a ‘greener' way of life with a 27% increase in household recycling and composting.

In Cheltenham alone, 2005/6 figures show that of the 49,658 houses from which waste is collected, 12,848 households recycle their own waste, (26%).
