My Apprentice Story - Angus Smith

Looking for an opportunity to kick-start your career in engineering? A Kohler Mira apprenticeship could be just what you are looking for.

To give you a flavour of what it’s like to be an apprentice at Kohler Mira, here is the first in a series of stories from our current and past apprentices.

First, meet Angus.  He joined us in August 2016. He is 21 years old and lives in Stroud. He studied at Marling School and his main interests include rugby and going to Festivals. Angus completed his first year technical studies at Gloucestershire Engineering School with excellent recommendations coming from all his tutors.

What made you want to come and work at Kohler Mira?

It was actually a personal recommendation from someone who works in the business. He told me Mira was a good company to work for and somewhere I could get a good start in my career.

What is the best part of taking on an apprenticeship?

For me, it’s the chance to get hands-on experience. When I’m set a project or am working through a module at college, I can use the skills I’m gaining as part of my apprenticeship. For example, I’ve been using CAD and looking at CNC (Computer Numerical Control) programming at Mira which I also use at college.

Another great thing is the support I get from the people I work with at Kohler Mira. If I’m working on something new and am not really sure how to go about it, there is always someone I can speak to.

Do you feel there are a lot of opportunities for career development at Kohler Mira?

Yes, definitely. I’ve already worked in quite a few areas of the business gaining experience and meeting lots of new people on the way. I get the chance to really prove myself as I’m given real projects and challenges to solve.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to people you know and, if so, why?

I would 100% recommend it, because not enough emphasis is put on apprenticeships through school life. I find it is a lot more rewarding and an apprenticeship can also benefit you more than people might think.

We have a rich history of apprentices with many of them going on to develop their careers within our business, both in the UK and globally. Currently, three of the directors on our Executive team started their journey as apprentices. If you would like to find out how you can join us, email stem@mirashowers.com
