Finance Director, Sarah Sadler joined our business back in 2000 on a – you guessed it – a finance apprenticeship. Here Sarah shares how opportunities within her early career helped her to get to where she is today.
“I’ve always had a thing about counting – I count everything! And I loved maths at school. When the opportunity came up to become a finance apprentice at Kohler Mira and it was basically my dream job!
My apprenticeship not only helped me to learn the theory, but also gave me the chance to put that into practise in the workplace. The business aligned my formal studies with the roles I was put in. I grew quickly in confidence because of this, as it helped me really understand what the purpose of my role was and how I contributed to the bigger picture.
I’m so proud now that that firm start and the continuing support of the business has allowed me now to become a part of our Executive team – to be part of leading this business.
You can really take charge of your career at Kohler Mira. There are so many opportunities both in the UK and globally. I’ve spent time on secondment in France and I frequently travel to the Kohler headquarters in the US now as part of my role.
The business and the managers I’ve had have allowed me to basically take my wish list of everything I’d have wanted to achieve in my career and to put that in to practice. I do the same now with my team. Their development is high on my list of priorities – because I feel that part of being a leader is understanding what motivates your team. And everybody is different!
An apprenticeship gives you an amazing opportunity to learn the theory and gain recognised qualifications, whilst also allowing you to apply the theory to the real world in a real business. It also provides a solid foundation to your career, and allows you to work with people who have the experience and knowledge to support you.
