Two of our Mira Marketing based associates have been spending time over with our parent company Kohler in Wisconsin, USA. Here's the first of two reports from Tom Godden, Market Analyst
When people ask why did I want to take a 6 month secondment in the US, for me, it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down and one I would have kicked myself had I not taken. Weirdly, I'd mentioned to my family last year that I wanted to do 6-12 months in America, so this came at the right time in my career. Being part of Kohler Mira, you hear so much about Kohler Co. and often wonder what it is really like so it was great to witness first-hand what life is like in Wisconsin.
Being away from home was honestly the toughest thing that I’ve done in my career so far. The hardest part was the time difference. If I'd had a bad day, my usual support network were all in bed!
But, what I'd hoped to gain was to build my digital communications, commercial and Ecommerce experience, whilst making some great contacts and seeing a bit of America and I certainly achieved that!
How do you think the secondment has helped you develop? And, will it help you in your role or future roles?
I'm now back in the UK and have brought a lot of the learning and experience back with me. I've recently moved into a new role, which I'm really excited about.
I built some great contacts within the digital communications team in the US and will continue to SKYPE with them regularly to help continue my development.
Among my many learnings two key ones were:
- ‘Think bigger’ – Don’t stop at the project in hand, think about how it can be replicated, digitised or rolled out across other channels / customer platforms.
- Become ‘customer obsessed’ – Adopting Amazon’s core pillar of always putting the end user at the heart of what we do.
I'm so glad I took the opportunity - I really do feel like I've grown as a person as a result and 100% that the experience I've gained will help me get to where I want to be in my career.
