Can you convert a loft into a bathroom?

You can convert your loft into a bathroom. Unless you seek planning permission, you’ll need to meet certain criteria regarding the size and specifications for loft conversions. It’s wise to ensure you can meet those conditions before you start to avoid wasting time and money.

The benefits of having a loft bathroom

Loft bathrooms are a great way to make the most of your house’s height, adding value to your property without sacrificing room. In large, one-bathroom households, they let multiple people shower at once. They’re also characterful, highlighting distinctive features like pitched roofs and skylights.

Loft bathroom design ideas

1. Introduce space-saving storage

If you’re looking to maximise space, choosing the right storage solutions is essential to reduce clutter. Wall-mounted shelves, vanities, mirrors and towel hooks are your best options, using vertical space and a small footprint to make the room appear bigger. You might also consider whether you need a bath or shower. Or, get the best of both worlds with a shower over a bath.

2. Choose the right shower

Choosing an electric shower is one solution to the problem of supplying hot water to your loft. Electric showers are easily installed, needing only an electrical connection and access to the cold-water supply. Plus, you’ll be grateful for the backup shower if your boiler breaks down!

3. Consider creating a wet room

Wet rooms are ‘tanked’ (fully sealed to prevent water damage), freeing up space in place of bulky shower cubicles, a great space-saving option for smaller bathrooms.

4. Explore freestanding baths

Freestanding baths are easier to install than built-in tubs because they’re not attached to any walls. They’re often larger and carry more water than wall-mounted baths. They expose every wall, giving the illusion of a bigger room – so you get a better bathtub without sacrificing space

5. Choose lighting carefully

Getting loft lighting right can be a challenge. A sloped roof rules out downlights (the most popular light fixture, flush-mounted or recessed into the ceiling) because the slant directs light sideways.

Still, there are plenty more lighting options for your lift bathroom conversion. Wall lights are a popular alternative, brightening dark corners and adding character. They come in various styles, including lantern, flush-mount and picture wall lights – so you’re guaranteed to find the right fit for your space.

Meanwhile, spotlights are adjustable, and LED strip lights are a great way to incorporate colour therapy into your bathroom routine.

6. Consider installing skylights

The best way to light your bathroom is with natural light. Skylights maximise natural light, brightening your bathroom and mood. They don’t use energy, so they could help you save on bills.

Make it an ensuite

If you have a bigger attic that can accommodate the luxury of a bedroom and ensuite, you’ll likely want to save as much space as possible for the bedroom itself. A smaller ensuite that uses the above tips will maximise bathroom space without intruding on your bedroom.
