Why is my shower too hot, or not heating up enough?

General FAQ

Seasonal changes can affect the temperature of your shower, especially if you use an electric model.

In warmer months, the incoming cold water is naturally warmer, which can make your shower feel hotter than expected. In colder months, the opposite happens, and your shower may feel cooler.

Adjusting your shower’s power and temperature settings can help maintain a comfortable experience all year round.

Watch the video or read below on how to adjust electric and power showers for seasonal changes:

How to adjust

In colder months:

1) Turn the power dial on high.

2) Turn the temperature dial higher, clockwise.

In summer months:

1) Turn the power dial to high. Opt for Eco or Medium to save power and water.

2) Turn the temperature dial lower, anti-clockwise.

Control dials explained

Power dial:

Electric showers have two heating elements through which the water passes, before being delivered. The power dial controls these.

Low - heating elements are switched off, and the water delivered is just the temperature of the water flowing through your mains water supply.

Med/ Eco - one heating element is on, providing medium heat.

High - both heating elements are on, providing maximum heat.

Temperature dial:

The temperature dial controls the speed of the flow of water running past the heating elements.

Turning this dial down (cold) speeds up the flow, and turning it up (hot) slows down the flow, allowing the water to spend more time passing over the heating elements, resulting in warmer water temperature.

Mixer and digital showers

Mixer and Digital showers can also be affected.

Mixer showers combine hot and cold water supplies, so seasonal changes in your cold water temperature can still affect the overall mix. To maintain a consistent shower temperature:

  • You can increase the hot water temperature by adjusting your boiler or cylinder thermostat.

  • For gravity-fed systems, ensure your hot water cylinder is delivering water between 55–65°C for optimal performance.
